Apple Import Origins Compared: Eight Countries, One Supply Chain

Why India imports apples at all

Domestic Himachal and Kashmir fruit is seasonal. Imports fill the gaps — extending year-round availability, adding varieties and calibres local orchards don't cover, and meeting premium retail demand when domestic stocks run low.

Northern-hemisphere origins

Turkey, Iran, Italy and Poland ship during and just after their autumn harvest. Italy and Poland are known for consistent grading and cold-store programmes that supply well into the new year; Turkey and Iran offer competitive, regionally close volumes.

Southern-hemisphere origins

Chile, South Africa and New Zealand harvest on the opposite calendar, arriving when northern stocks age — keeping fresh, firm fruit flowing through India's leaner months. New Zealand and Chile are prized for eating quality and reliable export protocols.

The United States

US apples (notably Washington State) bring recognised premium varieties and tight grading, serving the top end of the market.
