What is rootstock — and why it matters
An apple tree is two plants joined together: a fruiting variety (the scion) grafted onto a root system (the rootstock). The rootstock controls how large the tree grows, how quickly it bears fruit, and how well it tolerates soil and disease. Choosing the right rootstock is the single biggest decision in planting a modern orchard.
M9 — high-density, early yield
A dwarfing rootstock that keeps trees small, allowing thousands of trees per hectare on a trellis. Orchards crop earlier and are easier to prune and harvest — the foundation of high-density planting.
MM106 — the balanced workhorse
A semi-dwarfing rootstock offering a strong balance of vigour, anchorage and yield. Well suited to a wide range of sites where full high-density support is not yet in place.
M111 — vigour for tougher sites
A vigorous, hardy rootstock tolerant of drought and variable soils, giving well-anchored trees on marginal or replant ground where dwarfing types would struggle.

Rootstock Variety Guide
Choose the right rootstock for your orchard.
Rootstock choice determines tree size, how soon an orchard bears fruit, its disease resistance and its suitability to local soil and climate. Farmsons helps Himachal and Kashmir growers match the right rootstock to the right site — not just supply it. Filter by series or vigor class below.
Series
Vigor
M9
Dwarfing
Malling (M)
~30–35% of standard tree size, early-bearing, very high yield. Requires staking.
Best fit
High-density planting on irrigated, fertile soil.
M26
Semi-dwarf
Malling (M)
~40–50% of standard size, precocious and productive with good disease resistance.
Best fit
Medium-to-high density orchards.
M7
Semi-vigorous
Malling (M)
Moderately productive once established.
Best fit
Medium-to-low density plantings.
MM106
Semi-vigorous
Malling-Merton (MM)
Robust and widely adaptable, good anchorage, resistant to root diseases.
Best fit
Traditional Himachal & Kashmir layouts at medium density (650–800 trees/ha).
MM111
Vigorous
Malling-Merton (MM)
Highly drought-tolerant, extensive spreading roots, resistant to woolly apple aphid; tolerant of fire blight and crown/root rots.
Best fit
Drought-prone hillside terrain.

Dwarfing
EMLA
Virus-indexed M9 selection for reliable performance.
